Gotta Haves...

-Your sewing machine in good working order - I suggest having your machine tuned if it hasn’t been done in over a year. We will drive it hard all day. A workshop is an inconvenient time to find out that it needs servicing.

-A Free-motion Foot or Feet - Bring whatever free-motion feet you already own! (#29 or #24; BSR, etc.)

- Knee lift - If you are lucky enough to have one, bring it. You will learn why this is such a huge creative asset :-)

- Extension Table - or at least the table that came with your machine

- Safety Pins - a dozen will do

- Fabric Sandwiches - 2 yards of quality quilting cotton in solid (Kona cloth is ideal) or semi solid, muted prints. You can mix fabrics however you like or just bring all one color and trade some in class. Busy prints need not apply.

Quick method: Split the width of a 2yd piece of fabric as it comes off the bolt into thirds (you can tear) then iron and cut 18” pieces from those columns. OR: layer four 1/2 yard cuts and rotary cut into thirds (roughly 13 1/2” x 18”). Either way... Yield = 12 pieces to make six sandwiches

- Batting - 6 pieces of batting cut the same size as your “pages”. (Quilter's Dream Request weight POLY batting in black is great if you have some black Kona cloth in the mix; or the white). Or use up batting scraps from home.

- Thread - Bring 50 wt. Mettler Silk Finish cotton in a few bright colors that you really enjoy.

- Sewing Needles - Schmetz Quilting size 75 (plus a size 90 if you wish to play with thicker threads).

- Scissors - Bring along a small to medium sized pair with nice sharp tips.

- Snips - I enjoy using the Gingher Snips... bring any brand with very precise, sharp tips.

- Pencil & Paper - Bring five sheets of any plain typing or copy paper; also a sharp pencil and an eraser.

- Gloves - I love the Machingers.... have you tried them? Bring what you feel most comfortable wearing.

- Marking Tool - Clover’s Chalk Marker is a terrific tool. (I find both white and silver to be indispensible). Clover’s Hera Marker is wonderful for fantasy feathers, contemporary paisleys and plumes.

NOTE: Mini Roving Buffet from Fiberella - Will be available for you to select roving from for optional machine felting on the day of class. (You can also couch with it)!

Nice-to-Haves...

- Sew Slip - You’ll love how easily your fabric and felt embellishment material moves around on this self sticking, nomess- left-behind mat.

- BSR Foot - If you already own one bring your BSR along to learn more about using it effectively. Ask Asheville Cotton Company to provide you with one if you would like to take a BSR for a test drive during class.

- Baby Lock’s Embellisher or Bernina’s Needle Punch Accessory - Bring along your own or try one out at the shop... most of the day we will be doing free-motion stitching; but you will have an option to explore a couple of machine felting techniques that look great with free-motion stitching.

- Extra Felting/Needlepunch Needles - It’s always good to bring a spare pack with your machine.

- A seat cushion &/or platform (phonebook :) to elevate your foot pedal - This will keep you comfortable!

- Extra Threads - Any beautiful variegated ones (Superior, Mettler cotton and Polysheen, YLI etc) are fun.

- Thread Stand - You can always enjoy smooth and steady thread feed to your machine. Bernina offers one to fit on your machine that’s wonderful. Or an independent one that sits on the table is also helpful.

- Some “Green” $ - It’ll be a good day to pick up books on free-motion quilting, threads, tools, etc.

- A quality Basting Gun with Micro/Fine Fabric Fasteners - This is a great, time saving investment for finishing lots of wonderful sketchbooks and quilts in your future. Provides a clear view and saves your fingers from soreness too!
