Note: The fabrics shown below are not from the blocks this month, and photos are not to scale.
How to make flying geese units:
Layer one background rectangle (3-1/2" x 6-1/2" piece) of fabric and one of the 3-1/2" squares right sides together as shown below. Sew diagonally across the 2" square as shown. You can use a Sew Easy Guide as I did in the photo, or you can draw a line
with a pencil from corner to corner to follow while you're sewing. I like to start sewing in the direction shown to keep the sewing machine from "eating" the corners of your blocks.

Your block should look like this now:

Press the square up to the corner. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

Flip up the corner and cut all the layers underneath:

Sew diagonally across the second square as you did the first time:

Press up the second corner, and trim as before. You should have a 1/4" seam allowance at the top of the block. Not too bad, huh? Voila!

Help with December Blocks
NOTE: On the Holiday Cheer colorway, Color #3 (Green) is actually the LARGER piece of green, not the smaller piece. Sorry for any confusion!
The key to making your pinwheels lie flat in the center is to always press toward the darker. If you are using Triangle Papers, be sure to layer so that the lighter fabric is on top. That way, your triangles will automatically be pressed toward the darker side.
To get the pinwheels to work out, lay out the blocks as shown on the instruction sheet. Your pinwheel will look like this:

Then, sew them together. On the back side in the center, you need to snip just one or two little threads right in the center. Don't worry... you'll find them!

Now, press everything toward the dark again. That means that the last seam will be pressed half one way and half the other. The center should look just like a little tiny pinwheel!

Help with January Blocks

When sewing the center section together, you will need to sew two opposite corners first. Be sure to center the triangles before sewing:

Then press them open:

Now you can sew the other two corners:

and press them open. Your center block should be 6-1/2" square, and there should be a 1/4" seam between the corners of the square and the outside edge of the block. If not, try, try again!
